NIA started in 1926 with the establishment of the Nelson Insurance Agency by Bernat Nelson, a general contractor. Paul Gross, Bernat Nelson’s grandson, built the agency through internal growth and acquisition. Through his role as Chairman, Paul continues to provide direction and leadership to the agency today.
The 1980’s and 1990’s saw NIA’s growth fueled by the establishment of key branch offices and acquisitions. NIA’s largest acquisition was in 1994, when a majority interest in the Kornreich brokerage operation in New York was purchased. Subsequent mergers with UVW/ Elizabeth Group, UIA Agency, and National Associates further increased NIA's revenue and market penetration.
The legal merger of Kornreich with NIA’s New Jersey offices in 2000 resulted in a new entity called The NIA Group, LLC. In addition to its strategic mergers, NIA has experienced significant internal growth of its producer force, enabling it to focus on designing custom plans that surpass client expectations and address individual needs in a rapidly changing environment.
NIA is the largest independent insurance brokerage firm in the New York metropolitan area and operates offices throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Florida. Four generations of family leadership have been a critical component of NIA's success.
