New Law Provides Continuous Coverage for Dependents up to Age 30
On January 12th, Governor Richard J. Codey passed Bill Number S2283, which requires NJ insurers to offer coverage for eligible unmarried dependents on their parent’s family health insurance coverage plan until they reach age 30.
Under the new law, effective May 12, 2006, a dependent is eligible for the extended coverage if he or she is either unmarried, has no dependents of his/her own and is a New Jersey resident or is enrolled as a full-time student in another state and is not eligible for coverage under any other health plan. To receive coverage, the insured would be required to pay a slightly higher premium. This would be entitle the dependent to the same level of coverage as any other dependent child within the health plan.
